The idea of crowd-sourcing public transit ideas is excellent for all the reasons crowd-sourcing is good (detailed local knowledge, fresh thinking, community connection, etc.) but, public transport is a complicated problem with many tradeoffs. LA Metro does a pretty good job at using Instagram (photo blogging) to engage riders, including contests that enable riders to win prizes. They also repost images of transit infrastructure in LA and elsewhere, encouraging riders to take photos of transit.
Transit agencies need to develop a social media strategy that fits their needs. They need to consider their goals and the amount of resources they are willing to dedicate to these programs. Then they need to choose the appropriate platforms (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.), recognising specifically that each of these platforms has a different personality and requires a different level of involvement.
